“For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith.” (1 Cor 1:21)
WISDOM IS IN THE MIND and the mind is made to see order. When the mind is alive it sees the way things are. If it looks deeper, it can see not only how things are but how they have to be.
It is the need of the mind to see how things have to be that disqualifies it from having the final word about God. There is no “have to be” in God as Creator. He didn’t have to make anything. He was and is perfectly complete and happy in himself. His creation is both wonderful and totally unnecessary.
Neither is there a “have to be” with respect to us. God didn’t have to make us. Having made us, he did not have to make us to share his life and his friendship for ever. Having made us for his friendship, he did not have to die on a cross to restore that friendship when it was foolishly lost.
It pleased God to restore that friendship through dying in an act of love that seemed excessive and foolish and that certainly did not have to be, but in which we are invited to share by the foolishness and freedom of belief.
