It can happen that communication through a symbolic action is more efficient than simple word-communication. Actually, we need both words and signs to communicate with one another. In today’s Gospel the disciples respond both to God’s word. “Were not our hearts burning within us while he. . .opened the Scriptures to us?” and to God’s sign (sacrament): “He was made known to them in the breaking of bread.”
Our growth in faith is made through the ministry of God’s word and comes to its fulfillment in the celebration of the Eucharist—a sacramental (signifying) meal. A Christian can know a great deal about our Lord without knowing him as a person! Make every Sunday worship service a personal encounter with the Lord Jesus in both Scripture and Sacrament (the Eucharist).
